A Love Letter to Shorty is a visual ode to Black women. Visually being similar to Light, it focuses on Black women’s popularized style in the 90’s. That decade serves as a sense of nostalgia for me growing up and serves as one of the most iconic and imitated styles still to this day. With this project I want to communicate the history and beauty that Black women have brought to pop culture. I want my viewers to see the beauty of Black hair rather than the stereotypes often associated with these looks. I want viewers to see how hair is a huge part of Black female identity and recognize the intricacies of what it takes to complete our hair. It is a history of racism associated with Black women when we do not subscribe to Eurocentric hair styles.
